Southern Maine Chapter - News

Meetings - 3rd Tuesday of the month at various locations.
SOME Chapter has five active Area Groups which meet once a month. For times and
locations of all other meetings please check the NER website or contact Barbara Hepburn.

Our Chapter hosted a successful NER Seminar at the Cliff House in Ogunquit, ME. We received many positive comments from attendees regarding the classes, location, favors, door prizes, exhibits, boutique, Crazy Quilt Lecture by Suzanne Bruno, etc. Several attendees from Texas indicated that they held much bigger Seminars but ours was much nicer in comparison to theirs because of all the special touches! As a result of our
Chapter hosting the Seminar, we picked up several plural EGA members. Our weekend boutique, Attic Heirlooms, proved to be a big hit for attendees. It is a tribute to the SOME Chapter that made this such a
wonderful Seminar!

Our yard sale at the NER Seminar was also very popular and added a hefty sum of $240.25 to our Chapter’s treasury! All leftovers were donated to the Salvation Army Fabric Fair in Falmouth, ME.

Our Annual Chapter Meeting was held on May 16 at the Portland Country Club. The meeting was Barbara Hepburn’s last as our Chapter President and she was presented with a very special quilt in which the blocks were created by various Chapter Members and assembled by several talented quilters. A huge “Thank You” to Barbara for her leadership during the past 4 years! Elected as co-presidents are Marilyn Sames and Linda Marchand. We both look forward to serving our Chapter during the next 2 years. The President’s challenge this year was an eyeglass case and the winner was Laurie Sims! The President’s Challenge for next year will be a “purse” which can range from a coin purse to a tote bag and can be made using fabric, beads, etc. Since 2018 will be the 40th anniversary of our Chapter, the Challenge piece must incorporate the color ruby red.

Our getaway at Calumet in Freedom, NH was a wonderful time to get away and work on those “works in
progress” and our Seminar projects. It was the perfect time to get away and relax from Seminar.
Several members will be “stitching in the aisles” at the ME Quilt Show in Augusta, ME at the end of July. We demonstrate on the projects we are working on, answer questions and discuss membership in our Chapter. This is always a very popular venue to get information out to stitchers since this event draws many people every year.

The deadline of June 1, 2017 for the New England Needlework Map with Catherine Jordan is fast approaching! More detailed information on the Betsy Morgan Classes that will be held on April 6 & 7, 2018 will be in the SOME July/August 2017 newsletter. In addition to “The Virgin Queen’s Stitching Wallet” that will be a 1 and ½ day class, Betsy has designed a companion piece, “The Virgin Queen Pocket” that may be taken as an individual ½ day class or in addition to the Stitching Wallet. Our Chapter Program Chairs have many unique classes and projects in store for our Chapter Members in the future. Stay tuned!
