Connecticut River Valley Chapter - News

On February 4th Lynn Payette gave us a very informative and entertaining presentation on “This and That” – lots of stitches and techniques we could use in our own embroideries. She will be with us again June 15 and 16 and December 8 for a three-day class on her beautiful piece “Tree of Life.”This non-charted and personalized design uses flosses, pearl cottons, metallic threads and beads on Congress cloth. Stitches include couching, chain, outline, whipped back-stitch, long and short, satin, raised chain, raised outline, buttonhole, closed and open fly, fishbone, and French knots. Students choose between rust/gold/green or blue/silver/green. The cost of this class is the kit fee of $105 plus $10 for non-CRVC members. The deadline to sign up is May 1st. (information appears later in newsletter)

An entirely different looking tree of life will be featured on October 12 and 13 when Carolyn Standing Webb teaches us “Ancestree,” a blackwork piece personalized by adding your own family names to her Jacobean-style design on 32 count antique white linen. Three sizes of black silk threads are used along with some gold for a special sparkle. Shading is achieved by variations in both pattern and thread. We will learn these shading techniques, how to create the paths our own for double running, and why some blackwork patterns are not reversible. The class fee of $75 ($85 for non-members) includes the $55 kit fee. Sign-up deadline is September 1. (Information under Fundraising.) In between, we will be taking a trip on April 21st to the Salmon Brook Historical Society in Granby, CT to view a number of their embroideries, quilts, and gowns. This is also our annual meeting and election of officers.
