Sampling the Snowfall - Susan Goodman

Sampling the Snowfall

GoodmanThis class has a samp-ler set piece that is an adaption from a Monet painting. The picture had been scanned, stretched, and cropped and distorted in the Publisher program. This class is for those people who would like an introduction to transferring their favorite photos to fabric and canvas. Each day demonstrations of several methods will be described, including using the personal computer and scanner. Each student will be given photos that have been transferred to special paper and ironed to their congress cloth. From this elementary method of transferring a design, other methods of creating painted backgrounds are among the methods explored. There will be a discussion of what is original vs. an adaptation. The remainder of the class will be spent learning how to interpret the picture in appropriate stitches for congress cloth. Stitching will concentrate on how to use sampler stitches and embroidery to change a photograph.

Leaf Lariat - Theresa Buchle

Leaf Lariat

BuchleI designed the Leaf Lariat because I wanted something that had both structure and a free-form feeling. The lariat is stitched with a Spiral Brick Stitch, using two different types of beads giving it a nice raised “vein”. The leaves are stitched in DiagonalPeyote Stitch (also referred to as Russian Leaves), again with the addition of seed bead “veins”. I’ve used a variety of finishes in the beads for leaves, from dark matte browns to fiery oranges and lustrous greens, mimicking Mother Nature as much as I could. This project is designed not only to teach students how to incorporate various techniques in one project but also some color theory using glass. The colors and finishes used in the leaves illustrate the reflection and refraction of light, as well the interplay of matte and gloss which can only be achieved throught this medium. The lariat can be a very subjective piece as students can increase or decrease the number of leaves stitched and/or their placement on the vine, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art.

Technique: Beadweaving Proficiency: Basic Color Choices: As shown Stitches included are: Spiral Brick Stitch, Diagonal Peyote Stitch.

Teacher provides: Japanese Delica beads, Japanese seed beads, coordinating threads, beading needles in 2 sizes, instructions with color graphics.

Student provides: Usual stitching supplies, beading surface such as velux or ultrasuede (no plastic dishes, please), light and magnification, if needed.

Prework: None Kit fee: $75.00
